NOCTURNE

Dark roasts, bright mornings. A house of ritual, reverie — and really good coffee.

01 / About

Coffee is ritual, not routine.

Nocturne opened in the fall of 2019, tucked into a former print shop on SE Division. We came from different worlds — kitchens, studios, farms — but shared one conviction: a coffee house should feel like a place, not a transaction.

Every drink we serve starts with beans roasted within 25 miles, sourced from growers we know by name. Our baristas are craftspeople, not button-pushers. The music is vinyl. The light is warm. No one rushes you.

The kind of place where you can hear yourself think, and the espresso tastes like somebody meant it.

Source with intention

We work directly with importers who pay above Fair Trade minimums. Every origin is visited by someone on our sourcing team at least once per contract cycle. Relationships before transactions.

Roast in small batches

Our partner roastery runs 15-kilo batches only. Every profile is dialed in for that specific lot, that specific crop year. No assembly lines. No compromise on development time.

Dial in every morning

Before we open, every barista calibrates their station: grind, dose, yield, time. We taste. We adjust. We taste again. The first customer gets the same shot quality as the hundredth.

What people say when they're not being polite

I've been chasing the high of a perfect cortado since I left Barcelona six years ago. Found it here, on Division Street, on a rainy Tuesday. Nocturne is the real thing.

"The only coffee shop in Portland where I can read for three hours without feeling like I'm taking up space. The baristas remember my order. The music is never, ever bad."

— Devin Okawa

"Campfire Cappuccino. That's it. That's the review. Just order it. Don't ask questions."

— Lena Hirsch

"Worth the 25-minute bike ride. Every. Single. Time. Get the Nocturne. Get the pastry. Sit at the window. You're welcome."

— Jamie Thao
