The Weight of Blue

15 Mar — 30 Jun 2025

An immersive exploration of pigment as material and metaphor. Silva transforms the gallery's main hall into a chromatic field, deploying two tonnes of hand-milled ultramarine pigment across walls, floor, and suspended silk panels — inviting visitors to inhabit colour itself.

NULLA Journal — biannual publication
Issue #08 — Now Available

NULLA
Journal

Published biannually, NULLA Journal extends the gallery's programme into print. Each issue pairs long-form essays with artist commissions, archival research, and visual portfolios that situate contemporary practice within broader cultural and material histories.

Issue #08, "On Ultramarine," traces the pigment's passage from Afghan lapis lazuli to Yves Klein's monochrome fields, with contributions from Mariana Silva, Helena Costa, and art historian João Ribas.

About the Gallery

Founded in 2019, NULLA is a contemporary art gallery and project space in Marvila, Lisbon's former industrial quarter. The gallery mounts six exhibitions annually, runs an artist residency programme in partnership with the Gulbenkian Foundation, and maintains a growing roster of seven artists working across installation, painting, sculpture, photography, and new media.

NULLA's programme is guided by material inquiry — a belief that the physical properties of art carry meaning that language alone cannot reach. The gallery takes its name from the Latin word for "nothing," an affirmation of the generative space between presence and absence.
